PROJECT SUMMARY:
Community water supply and sanitation programme, working with
the NGO SOWEDA, in three villages (Banteng, Dih, and Baneh) about 10Okm south
of Bamenda. The project is sponsored by the Overseas Development Administration
(ODA) and Department for International Development (DFID) Joint Funding Scheme.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
Phase I (1995-96)
* Design and construction of five spring boxes and the laying of a 1km pipeline to be connected to reservoir tanks in phase II.
* Establishment of a local water committee to maintain the water system.
Phase II (1996-97)
* Construction of two reservoir tanks and pipelines between the villages of Banteng, Dih, Baneh.
* Construction of six Ventilated Improved Pit Latrines (VIP) in Diln and Baneh to act as demonstrations for further projects.
Phase III(1997-98)
* Further pipe laying and construction of tap stands.
* Training of six new technicians to operate and maintain the water supply system.
* Construction of further demonstration pit latrines.
Phase IV (1998-99)
* Completion of Banteng community water supply project.
* Construction of double vault VIP latrines at both schools and market place.
* The existing water supply Nkiao was extended to Nwelong (740m of pipe) and a tapstand was installed.
* Preparation of water supply design for volunteers in 2000 (funded by the British High Commission for Cameroon).
* Surveying of future pote supply projects to be funded by DFID.

PROJECT SUMMARY:
SAFAD was invited to Uganda by an indigenous NGO, Nabulenzi Social Centre for Rural Development (NASCRUD), in 1995. The aim was to establish an agricultural training programme in sustainable land use techniques (agroforestry, soil conservation, post harvest technology) to increase long term production and food security in Kamuli district 100 km Northeast of Kampala.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
Phase I (1995-96)
* Initiated planning of a sustainable agriculture training programme. Over 100 farmers
participated.
* Identification of the factors hindering agricultural productivity in Kamuli District.
* Established and maintained five agricultural demonstration plots.
Phase II (1996-97)
* Initiation of 15 weekfarmer training programme (courses: soil conservation, agroforestry", postharvest technology, bee keeping, rabbit breeding vegetable gardening)
* Establishment of Multi Purpose Tree (MPT) nursery in Nawanyago.
* Demonstration plot of new bean varieties.
Phase Ill (1997-98)
* Extension work to increase farmer involvement and membership in the Farmer Scholar Programme (FSP). 500 new members.
* Improved networking and collaboration with NGO's, Governments and Institutions.
* Training in tree grafting, livestock management and production and selling of improved been seeds.
Phase IV (1998-99)
* Introduction of an agricultural input supply system (shops selling improved seed and fertiliser).
* Training of 160 farmer extension workers responsible for 8,000 farming families.
* Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) survey targeting future areas for extension work.

PROJECT SUMMARY:
The aim of this project with the Water Development Department of Kigesi Province, was to assess the success of a self-help programme, set up six years ago by the department, to improve water quality, health and sanitation. SAFAD's involvement came about through an ex-SAFAD volunteer, Tim Fowler.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
* Design and completion of a questionnaire to determine factors significant in affecting perception of a gravity-fed water system.
* Training sessions held to improve the technical skills of the Water Committee.

PROJECT SUMMARY:
A team of SAFAD volunteers were invited to survey and design a drinking water system in the village of Nyan. The project came about a recommendation from a previous Silsoe student from that area.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
* Design and construction of a gravity-fed water system including spring protection, a 6,000 litre storage tank, six tapstands and 1.4km of pipeline.
* Construction of demonstration plots and displays of soil conservation techniques to local farmers.

PROJECT SUMMARY:
Agricultural and domestic water in the area is supplied by a system of canals and tributaries which lack any form of flow control. As a result, there is a shortfall in water supply during the dry season and flooding in the wet season.

* Construction of a gabion dam, four canals and a wier to yield constant domestic and irrigation water supply throughout the year.

Starting from July 1986, four teams of SAFAD engineers arrived in Kenya to work on various projects in conjunction with KWAHO. Three teams worked in the Kanjira Region on community water supply and soil conservation projects and the other team worked on a water and health project on Mfango Island.
TEAM 1 ACHIEVEMENTS:
* Construction of brushwood dams to control gully development,
* Soil conservation and erosion control demonstrations.
* Supervision and construction of 75m3 ferrocement rainwater harvesting tanks at 7 schools.
* Construction of VIP latrines at each of the schools.
TEAM 2 ACHIEVEMENTS:
* Establishment of twenty tree nurseries with primary schools and women's groups.
* Demonstration of soil conservation techniques to local stakeholders.
TEAM 3 ACHIEVEMENTS:
* Construction of subsurface water tanks in eight local schools.
* Compilation of an instruction manual detailing the construction of the tanks, for use by the builders after the team had left .
TEAM 4 ACHIEVEMENTS:
* Completion of a preliminary survey of water, health, land resources, social structures, attitudes and agricultural needs throughout the Island.
* Design and construction of a 15m' demonstration ferrocement rainwater harvesting tank for ease of replication by local craftsmen.

The volunteers studied the irrigation and land use systems in the region.

This community water supply project in Rbale was conceived after a request was made to Richard Carter, who had previously undertaken a water supply project in the area. Tear Fund paid for all the materials used in tank construction.

* Construction of two 8,000 litre rainwater harvesting tanks.
* The team had intended to protect some spring sites and install some rower pumps but trouble obtaining government approval meant they were unable to complete this objective.

college. The projects aimed to demonstrate various means of simple and
low-cost, appropriate technologies for agricuituai development.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
* A compact, and easily portable, spinning disc rainfall simulator was constructed to enable students to study erosion processes.
* A low-cost ram pump was built and tested.
* An oxen drawn roller was developed and proved successful in preparing seed-beds.
* A simple low-cost maize sheller was built out of locally available materials.
* A Cretan-Sail type windmill was built to demonstrate to students the possible use of windpower to raise water for irrigation.
* A simple hand-driven winnower was developed.
