PROJECT: Klong Mac Nut Community Forest Project

TEAM: Philippa Allen

PARTNER: German Development Service (DED). Thai Payap Development Association (TPDA)

PROJECT SUMMARY:

Assessment of forest use by local communities and preparation with TPDA of a marketing strategy for forest products and handicrafts.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
* Rapid Rural Appraisal of forest resources and species diversify Preparation of a marketing plan for export of local handicrafts
* Secured a loan to develop local business and the TPDA office.
* Training community groups in the production of Mulberry paper and natural dyes.

Project 1:
Development of a multi-geared Pedal rickshaws system to reduce spinal problems associated with heavy loads,

Project 2:
Assessment of Mulberry and Arjuna trees for rearing silkworms to generate income for a local woman's group.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:

Project 1:
* Design, development and fabrication of a gear system. Trial results positive.

Project 2:
* Establishment of Mulberry and Arjuna nursery trials and assessment of appropriate irrigation systems

1991 THAILAND

PROJECT: Thailand

TEAM: Nigel Riglar

PARTNER: The Dhammanaat Foundation for Conservation and Rural Development (D.F.C.A.R.D).
Nigel Riglar worked with the D.F.C.A.R.D., which is a Thai non-profit making organisation based on Buddhist principles. Their immediate aim is to restore forest and water resources through projects focussing on education, rural development and reforestation.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:
* Design and construction with local engineers of a 35, 000M3 reservoir.
* Reconstruction of a channel and the installation of three drop structures.
* Survey of 1Okm of irrigation canals and channels.

PROJECT: Madhya Pradesh

PROJECT SUMMARY:

SAFAD were invited to visit Padhar Hospital completing various surveys and suggesting improvements to existing programmes.

PARTNER: Evangelical Lutheran Church, Padhar Hospital.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:

TEAM I - (NOV'88 - JAN'89)
* Completion of a survey of Padhar Hospital prioritising the needs of the community.
* Review of the existing programmes of the Community Health and Development Department with suggestions to improve efficiency. TEAM II - (SUMMER'89)
* Establishment of two nurseries.
* Demonstrations of soil conservation measures.
* Promotion of efficient water use. TEAM Ill -(AUTUMN '89)
* Installation of demonstration plots for soil and water conservation.
* Development of the Padhar hospital dairy into a demonstration farm.
* Preparation and distribution of illustrated information sheets in Hindi.

1985 THAILAND

PROJECT: Loei

TEAM: 3 Members

PARTNER: The UK-Thai Project (UTP).

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The SAFAD team participated in the second phase of a Thai-British project aimed at finding a practical solution to the problem of aflatoxin in maize. (The annual cost to Thailand of the aflatoxin problem is approximately US$50 million per annum).

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:

* Drying and storage trials were carried out in two provinces.
* Maize with low levels of aflatoxin was successfully produced.
* The benefits of the research were passed onto local farmers in order to produce better quality maize.

1983 PAKISTAN

PROJECT: Gilgit, Nothern Areas

TEAM:Simon Bamford, Chris Brighouse, Ingrid Eichler,John Graham, Mahamood Jumani, Stuart Lockton, Oliver Morgan, Phillip Nuttall, Steve Rickets, Hamish Rowan-Hamilton.

PARTNER: United Nations Development Programme.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The SAFAD team undertook various agricultural engineering projects throughout the Northern Areas of Pakistan by request of the UNDP and FAO. The projects were aimed at demonstrating various means of low-cost, appropriate technologies for agricultural development.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:

* Testing of tent and see-saw type fruit dryers.
* Demonstration of windmill and turbo-hammer sprinklers.
* Feasibility studies for regional canal systems.
* River bank protection in the village of Damaris.

1982 MALAYSIA

PROJECT: Sarawak

TEAM: Regretably unknown

PARTNER: Department of agriculture, Soils Division.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The Sarawak project was run by the Malay Department of Agriculture in the Ulu Lemanak   Region of Malaysia. The project focussed on introducing new methods of farming to enable farmers to exploit previously unused land.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:

* Supervision and construction of bundled terraces.
* Mapping of the Ulu Lemanak region showing the extent and regions of shifting agriculture.
* Grass seed cover crop trials
* Analysis of the accuracy of estimating field sizes in the Padawan region.

1980 SRI LANKA

PROJECT: Sri Lanka

TEAM: Adam Dickinson, James Spence, Stephen Rendeil, Arni Sigurdsson, Jeremy Short, Peter Thompson, Ruth Hulme, Judith Hinch, Janet Skilton, Edward Blanchard.

PARTNER: Department of Agricultural Engineering, University of Sri Lanka

PROJECT SUMMARY:

Volunteers  spent time working on various projects at the University of Sri Lanka. These projects aimed to further research and development in agricultural engineering.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:

* Design and construction of two types of evapotranspiration measuring devices.
* Design and construction of a biogas unit to act as a demonstration model for students.
* Design and construction of a hand held dynamometer to assist in the measurement of energy expenditure during weeding operations.
* Completion of a tractor survey for the Overseas Development Administration (ODA)

1969 IRAN

PROJECT: Iran-Karaj

TEAM: Pat Wetherell, Rick viner, Brian Watts, Hugh Stirling, Anne Watts

PARTNER: Karaj Agricultural Training Centre

PROJECT SUMMARY:

In the summer of 1968, two Silsoe postgraduates and two undergraduates, arranging their own sponsorship from companies and organisations, spent five weeks working at the Karaj Agricultural Training Centre in Iran. The expedition proved extremely successful and out of it was born SAFAD.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS:

* Investigation into the efficiency of agricultural irrigations systems.
* Demonstrations of machinery and soil conservation techniques to students at the Karaj Agricultural Training Centre.
